Free Memorial Day Weekend Beach Party: City of Ft. Lauderdale's 4th Annual Great American Beach Party, Saturday, May 25, 2013

Celebrate Memorial Day weekend 2013 at the City of Fort Lauderdale's 4th Annual Great American Beach Party on Saturday, May 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Fort Lauderdale Beach at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard.

The free event features a portion of Fort Lauderdale's world famous A1A that will be transformed into an entertainment mecca, featuring music, live performances, and activities for the entire family.

Two stages will feature live bands that will perform classic oldies and rock n' roll hits including such acts as Riverside Dixieland Band, Across the Universe and headliners Boogie Knights.

Children and adults will enjoy an array of activities including a beach water slide, bounce houses, face painting, hula-hoop, limbo and Twister contests, a water balloon toss and a sand castle building competition.

The event will also feature a classic car show with vintage automobiles lining up along A1A, giving beach-goers an up close look at more than 50 hot rods, ragtops and muscle cars.

An art show will include displays from several Fort Lauderdale artists including up and coming chalk artists.

To top off the evening, at 8:30 p.m. event-goers will be treated to a special screening of a movie presented by the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. The movie will be shown from 8:30 to 10 p.m. on a larger-than-life screen set.

El Galeón is a 170 foot, 495 ton, authentic wooden replica of a galleon that was part of Spain's West Indies fleet.

Visitors will have the chance to learn about the history that began 500 years ago while admiring the craftsmanship and grandeur of these galleons that reached Florida's coast centuries ago.  Tickets are FREE courtesy of the Broward County Commission.

Tours will be conducted each day from 9am to 5pm.

Individuals are welcome to visit the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau to pick up complimentary tickets.

Free Downtown Hollywood Artwalk - Saturday, May 18, 2013

Be on the front lines to witness the unveiling of the newest phase in the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project at this month’s Downtown Hollywood Artwalk on Saturday night.

Artist collective 2alas and solo artist Evoca1 each have committed to the project, which commissions “thoughtfully-curated” murals by prominent street artists. Evoca1’s “Posers and Dream Crushers” (located at 2020 Hollywood Blvd.) is expected to be completed in time for the walk, while 2alas will be at the very beginning stages of its “Untitled” (Mona Lisa) mural located at 1900 Hollywood Blvd.

Other artists that have contributed to this downtown initiative include Ruben Ubiera, Luis Pinto, David “Lebo” Le Batard, and Jessy Nite.

The Downtown Hollywood Artwalk is 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday.
